Strahl cites crime, rising costs in re-election pitch to Chilliwack-Hope voters

CHILLIWACK — Citing out of control crime and the rising cost of living, Chilliwack-Hope MP Mark Strahl says a change in government is needed nationally as he launches his re-election campaign ahead of next month’s federal election.

“I was born and raised here and raised my own family here, and it has been an incredible honour to represent the people of Chilliwack–Hope since 2011,” said Strahl. “I am once again seeking the privilege to serve this amazing community as their Member of Parliament and continue to bring the common sense of the common people to the House of Commons.”

Strahl says the election scheduled for April 28 is a choice between change and more of the same.

“This Liberal government is seeking a 4th term, but after 10 years of Carney-Trudeau Liberals, crime is out of control, the cost of living has skyrocketed, our national debt has doubled and our country is in an extremely weak position to respond to the threat of Trump’s tariffs,” said Strahl. “Only a new Conservative government, led by Prime Minister Pierre Poilievre, will put Canada First, stand up for Canadian workers and families, strengthen our borders, defend our sovereignty, and bring in a Common Sense plan to axe the tax, build the homes, fix the budget and stop the crime.”

Strahl was re-elected in 2021 with 44 per cent of the vote, defeating New Democratic Party candidate Danielle (DJ) Pohl who garnered 28 per cent of the vote. Liberal Party candidate Kelly Velonis finished third that year.

In 2019, Strahl received nearly 50 per cent of the vote in defeating Velonis and NDP candidate Heather McQuillan.

In 2015, Strahl narrowly defeated Louis De Jaeger with 42 per cent of the vote. DeJaeger came as close as anyone to challenging Strahl by earning 34.8 per cent of the vote.

Strahl was first elected in 2011, the year he captured 57.2 per cent of the vote ahead of Gwen O’Mahony, the NDP candidate.
