UPDATE: Chilliwack Fire Chief Andrew Brown has confirmed that no animals were in the barn at the time of Monday’s barn fire. According to a statement, 43 firefighters from five halls responded to a report of a structure fire in the 6600 block of Prest Road Monday in Chilliwack. While they were responding, firefighters could see visible columns of black smoke, prompting an immediate call for a second alarm. Fire crews confirmed there was a working structure fire with heavy fire and black smoke venting from a storage barn that contained multiple vehicles and equipment.

Fire Chief Brown says fire crews worked quickly to perform a defensive fire attack to bring the fire under control and prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent homes and structures, while securing a water supply.

“Thankfully, there was no animals in the barn at the time of the incident. Firefighters were able to protect all adjacent structures with no injuries to either the public or firefighters,” Chief Brown said.

This fire is under investigation by the RCMP and Chilliwack Fire Department at this time.

Original story below:

CHILLIWACK — A major barn fire broke out in farmland north of Promontory Monday (Mar. 24) afternoon.

More than a half dozen fire trucks were called to the scene just before 4 p.m. Witnesses say thick black smoke is rising from the property despite the heavy rain in the area. Flames are visible from as far away as Chilliwack River Road and Promontory.

The fire is located in the 6600 of Prest Road, near the intersection with Bailey Road.

Fire personnel are working to protect a nearby home from the flames.

All six fire halls (Cheam, South Sumas, Yarrow, Greendale, Ryder Lake, and Rosedale) were paged for the structure fire.

RCMP are working with the Chilliwack Fire Department to deal with the traffic around the fire scene.

Prest Road is currently shut down north of Bailey Road while firefighters attend.

BC Hydro arrived on scene at approximately 4:38 p.m. to disconnect power to the building.

As to the status of the farm animals around the time of the fire, Joanne Mcleod wrote on Facebook, “My mom and dad live there, my mom got the horses, all the animals are safe.”

Firefighters told dispatch at 4:53 p.m. that FortisBC is on scene and there is no gas to the building.

BC Hydro has been asked as of 5:01 p.m. to respond again after firefighters found another fire line.
