MISSION — The City of Mission’s ideas for water conservation aren’t drying up–

A voluntary water metering program has launched this week for single-detached homeowners who are willing to participate.

“This program is designed to help residents reduce water consumption, potentially lower utility costs, and protect local watersheds,” said the City in a release.

Efforts to save water started in 2018 when the Abbotsford-Mission Water and Sewer Commission (AMWSC) updated the Water Master Plan. Four years later, the Commission updated the region’s Water Efficiency Plan to address climate change and population growth pressures, introducing the idea of water metering.

“Water metering plays a crucial role in measuring consumption, identifying leaks, and promoting efficient water use.”

The City added that signing up for a water meter can help residents control their water costs by up to $230 annually, based on 2025 utility rates. It also allows local watersheds to support the city and the ecosystems within them, especially during summer droughts.

Once the city receives 100 eligible applications, a professional contractor will install the smart water meters for free. Interested homeowners can sign up online or in person at the City Hall Finance Department, 8645 Stave Lake Street.
