KENT — Back in February, a small but passionate group of Kent residents appeared before District council to continue their preservation efforts on the Old Agassiz Cemetery, also known as the Kent Municipal Cemetery, on Limbert Road.

A month later, on March 10, Council has unanimously supported the requests made by the Old Cemetery Preservation Society during their visit.

“Mayor and Council expressed their gratitude to the community volunteers for rising to the occasion to support the Old Cemetery when the District was unable to do so on its own,” said the District in a newsletter.

The requests included:

  • Direct staff to negotiate a management agreement between the District and the Old Cemetery Preservation Society,
  • Approve seed funding of $1,500 for the Society’s startup costs,
  • Allow the Society to use meeting space and a location to house a locked filing cabinet within a District-owned facility and
  • Allocate $10,000 in annual funding to cover improvements or enhancements to the Kent Municipal Cemetery.

Old Cemetery Preservation Society co-chair Bev Kennedy previously spoke with Fraser Valley Today, saying Cemetery maintenance was set to be abandoned before the group stepped in last month.

The municipal cemetery has approximately 250 burials, including a number of unmarked graves found by the Old Cemetery Conservation Plan Sub-Committee using ground-penetrating radar in 2017.
