Golden Ears Park set to reopen months after flooding

MAPLE RIDGE — Visitors can soon start camping at Golden Ears Provincial Park, which was shut down last fall due to damage from an atmospheric river weather system.

According to a release by the Ministry of Environment and Parks, storm repairs are well underway at the popular site north of Maple Ridge. If construction goes as planned, cars may be able to access the park by March 17.

“Golden Ears Park is a natural treasure and the most popular park for camping in B.C.,” said Minister of Environment and Parks Tamara Davidson. “We know it was difficult having most of the park closed this winter from the impacts of climate change, but visitor safety is our top priority.”

The October 2024 floods damaged many areas of the park, including trails and several sections of the Golden Ears Parkway, which leads to all three campgrounds. Some shoulder and partial lanes were washed away, and a landslide rerouted Viking Creek, causing significant trail washouts.

“Our local businesses thrive thanks to the million-plus visitors we are fortunate to welcome each year. While you’re here, we encourage you to explore all that Maple Ridge has to offer,” said Maple Ridge Mayor Dan Ruimy.

A small section of the road will be restricted to single-lane-alternating traffic until about early May.

Bookings are set to open at 7 a.m. on Wednesday (Mar. 19), with dates released on a four-month rolling window starting later in March. Reservations can be made online through the BC Parks website.
