Second-degree murder charge laid against Agassiz inmate allegedly involved in deadly cafeteria fight
AGASSIZ — The B.C. Prosecution Service has approved one count of second-degree murder against an inmate at an Agassiz prison for his alleged role in an assault involving multiple inmates in December 2024.
According to a statement from IHIT spokesperson Sgt. Freda Fong, Agassiz RCMP members responded to an altercation on December 15, 2024, at Kent Institution in which officers from Correctional Service Canada reported that a fight broke out in the cafeteria at the correctional facility. Several inmates assaulted a lone victim, later identified as 43-year-old Christopher Braun, who died from his injuries as a result of the fight. One inmate was transported to hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and two other inmates sustained minor injuries as a result of the fight.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) deployed to Agassiz and assumed conduct of the investigation with support from the Agassiz RCMP, the CSC, the Integrated Forensic Identification Service (IFIS) and the B.C. Coroners Service.
IHIT says it conducted a fulsome investigation and submitted a comprehensive report to the B.C. Prosecution Service for charge assessment.
