Chilliwack convenience store owners dismayed by RCMP investigation into break and enter

CHILLIWACK — Unsworth Market owners Moe and Nina, a husband and wife team, say they’re dismayed at what they say is a lack of police investigation into an attempted break and enter that happened about two months ago.

On Sunday, January 12, a stolen pickup truck forcibly backed into the convenience store during an attempted break and enter over the weekend. The incident occurred at about 6:30 a.m.

Police were quick to respond to the scene, arriving at the store before the owner could. The suspects were unable to gain access to the building, but the fallout from the incident is extensive. The business suffered significant damage to the building and several refrigerated coolers inside the building, resulting in plywood being mounted to the south-facing exterior of the building. Multiple beverages and other items were spilled and/or damaged during the attempted commercial burglary.

A Chilliwack RCMP spokesperson told Fraser Valley Today shortly after the incident the building sustained significant damage but no entry was gained and nothing was stolen, and the file was still under investigation.

Both owners say the investigative measures undertaken by Chilliwack RCMP, to date, have been minimal. They have approximately 16 surveillance cameras at their store, and are not able to email any RCMP members video footage of over 6 megabytes due to email attachment constraints. They say they asked for a cell phone number of an RCMP officer to send them footage directly, but were not given a police officer’s phone number.

They estimate the damage to their store at between $60,000 and $80,000, and will need to pay a $2,000 insurance deductible. They also believe their insurance premiums will likely increase because they filed a claim, as is often the case. Repair work to fix the damage had not started as of Sunday, March 9.
