Coquihalla protocol to be activated as fog, rainfall and snow sweep the Fraser Valley

Mar 9, 2025 | 9:00 AM

HOPE — The Coquihalla Snowshed Protocol will be put into effect today (Mar. 9) at 11 a.m., according to a social media post by DriveBC. 15-25cm of snow is anticipated on Highway 5 between Hope and Merritt throughout the day, with another 10-15 overnight. Snow will taper off to a few flurries Monday morning (Mar. 10).

This means drivers are expected to get ready for winter conditions, traffic control staff ramp up their presence, and commercial trucks should be chained up when they reach the sign at Box Canyon.

Environment Canada has also issued rainfall warnings for Metro Vancouver’s central, North Shore and northeast, including Coquitlam and Maple Ridge. The warning also extends from Whistler to the East & West Vancouver Island.

Roughly 75 to 120 mm of rain is anticipated from now to this afternoon. Drivers are asked to keep their speed in check and watch for pooling water.
