Community volunteer announces run for Hope council by-election

HOPE — Not long after it officially announced a by-election, the District of Hope already has one declared candidate to fill a vacancy on its municipal council.

Magnus DuBeau, a five-year resident of Hope, says he plans to run for the upcoming by-election on April 26, triggered when former councillor Zachary Wells resigned.

“I have lived in this community for almost five years, and while that may be a short amount time to some, for myself I have been able to accomplish a lot,” DuBeau wrote on Facebook last Saturday, March 1 at 7:15 p.m. “From the many committees and boards I sit on, to the clubs and groups that I proudly serve, I have been able to integrate myself and become a larger part of this community.”

DuBeau is perhaps best known around town for his job involving Hope Computers, a computer repair and service business he owns and operates. The business recently announced that it will be opening a retail storefront in March 2025 near Hope Municipal Hall.

DuBeau has a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering and is Comptia, Cisco and Microsoft certified. He has 23 years of IT experience.

“Many of you know me from Hope Computers, inviting me into your homes, your businesses, to tutor your children, and learn computer repair, engineering skills and providing better opportunities and futures,” DuBeau said. “I have earned the trust of many elderly clients and friends that I faithfully help against predatory prices and scam prevention, as well as sitting with you and even programming your TV’s.”

DuBeau says he’s tried to become active in Hope by participating in Hope Brigade Days, a festival in September that draws thousands of people to the picturesque community.

“Thousands of you know me as the Smiling Face at Brigade Days, volunteering to make our town shine that much brighter. I am always supporting our local businesses, or giving back to our community through charitable donations and volunteerism every week,” DuBeau said. “I believe in this town enough to bet my future here as a new owner of a retail shop in town, that provides local services rather than appeal to tourism. Moving here was the best decision of my life. If you know me, then you know my platform is to ‘Build the Community you Want to Live in’ which I practice Every. Single. Day. Let’s build it together.”

Early voting will happen Wednesday, April 16 and 23, followed by general election day on Saturday, April 26.
