Surrey man, male foreign national busted for excessive speed on Hwy. 1 east of Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK — BC Highway Patrol says it impounded two vehicles after the drivers, a Surrey man and a male foreign national, were clocked going up to 92 km/hr over the speed limit on Highway 1 east of Chilliwack last week.

According to a statement BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin, authorities think some motorists wrongly believe that police can only stop one vehicle at a time when in fact, police have advanced technology that allows them to capture the speeds of multiple vehicles.

Case in point, a single BC Highway Patrol officer saw two sedans traveling well beyond the speed limit in the same eastbound lane of Highway 1 at Popkum Road (exit 138) in Popkum. As a matter of fact, BC Highway Patrol vehicles have cameras, radar and laser speed readers, which is what enabled that same BCHP officer to clock the vehicles going up to 192 km/h in a 100-km/h zone.

Cpl. McLaughlin says the first driver pulled over immediately. However, the second driver needed “persuasion” by phone to return to the scene of where the first driver was pulled over because police told him that he and his vehicle had already been identified.

The drivers were identified as a Surrey man in his own car and a male foreign national in a rental car. Both were both issued seven-day vehicle impounds and tickets for excessive speed, along with tickets for failing to update their addresses. Both vehicles were transported to a tow yard near Chilliwack, police said.

“These excessive speeders, who were friends with each other, have learned a valuable lesson,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. “Once their cars were towed, BC Highway Patrol game them a ride to a local Tim Horton’s to think over their life choices. We encourage other drivers to do the same before they make the decision to speed.”
