CHILLIWACK — The man who died after a motor vehicle collision near the intersection of Vedder Road and Promontory Road in February has been identified as a native of the Philippines.

According to the text of a GoFundMe organized by Bish Kalsi, the victim is Nestor Ferdinand Pelaez, who was on his way to work on Tuesday, February 18 and was struck by a commercial vehicle. Pelaez was pronounced deceased at the scene. As of Monday afternoon, over $8,000 had been raised for Pelaez.

Kalsi wrote in the GoFundMe online appeal that Pelaez worked in Saudi Arabia for 10 years before moving to Chilliwack in August 2024. Originally from the Philippines, Pelaez worked at Earls Kitchen + Bar restaurant during his time in Canada.

“Nestor had a pleasant personality and a strong serious work ethic that was valued by all who worked alongside him,” the GoFundMe stated.

Nestor leaves behind his brothers, Ariel and Noriel, and sisters Portia Lyn and Lernie, who live in the Phillippines.

Funds received from the GoFundMe will help transport his body back to his family and pay for funeral expenses.

According to a statement from RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, Chilliwack RCMP members were called to the intersection of Vedder and Promontory at 2:42 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18). EHS personnel were on scene administering CPR when police arrived. Cpl. Kiener says paramedics determined the pedestrian was deceased.

The intersection was closed for several hours as personnel from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service were dispatched to assist with the investigation into the accident.

The driver of the commercial vehicle cooperated with police, Cpl. Kiener said.
