CHILLIWACK — A male e-scooter rider suffered significant injuries Monday morning and was airlifted to hospital after he collided with a vehicle in downtown Chilliwack.

A witness who wished to remain anonymous told Fraser Valley Today that she was in the area at the time and saw a man on a stand-up e-scooter traveling at a high rate of speed near Victoria Avenue and Fletcher Street.

“He was on one of those e-scooters going Mach 10, and the person in the car had just started going through the intersection from the stop sign,” the witness said. “He ploughed right into her. I was driving coming out of a parking lot, so I saw the guy zip past in front of me look at where I was going. I looked back to see him and that’s when I saw the scooter under the car.”

The witness said she stayed at the scene until paramedics arrived.

“I’d commented to myself, holy sh–, this guy is just whipping,” she told Fraser Valley Today. “The next thing, I look and I see the scooter under the car. That’s when I flipped a U-turn and went over there to make sure the lady, who was already phoning 9-1-1, I told her what address to give, and then I stayed until the ambulance got there.”

Chilliwack Fire Department established a landing zone at Chilliwack Middle School on Yale Road. A B.C. Emergency Health Services air ambulance landed at CMS at approximately 9 a.m.

SD33 told parents via email that the presence of an ambulance at CMS did not involve a student, instead it was a community incident.

BC Emergency Health Services told Fraser Valley Today it received a call at 8:14 a.m. Monday regarding a motor vehicle incident involving a cyclist at Fletcher Street and Victoria Avenue in Chilliwack. An ambulance with advanced care paramedics and an ambulance with primary care paramedics responded to the scene.

“Paramedics provided emergency medical treatment to one patient who was transported by ground ambulance to Chilliwack Middle School to meet an air ambulance helicopter. The patient was transported to hospital via air ambulance in critical condition under the care of critical care paramedics,” said PHSA Public Information Officer Rachelle Brown.
