Abbotsford police-involved crash may be linked to impaired driving

ABBOTSFORD — A police-involved collision in Abbotsford has left one person with serious injuries and prompted an investigation by B.C.’s Independent Investigations Office.

An Abbotsford Police news release says police investigators are considering impairment as a possible factor in the crash.

The Abbotsford Police Department says the crash happened around 4:05 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 20) at King Road and Gladwin Road. Police say an Abbotsford Police vehicle, occupied by two officers, was travelling along King Road when it collided with a vehicle near the intersection.

The driver was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries, while both officers were taken to hospital by ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

The AbbyPD Major Crime Unit is leading the investigation with support from additional officers and the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dash camera footage is asked to contact Abbotsford police at 604-859-5225.

Abbotsford Police says it has notified the IIO of the incident. The IIO is the independent civilian oversight agency of the police in British Columbia. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
