CHILLIWACK — A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP Detachment has confirmed that an adult male has died after a vehicle incident at the intersection of Promontory/Watson and Vedder Road in Sardis Tuesday afternoon.

According to a statement from RCMP spokesperson Corporal Carmen Kiener, Chilliwack RCMP members were called to the intersection at 2:42 p.m. Tuesday afternoon (Feb. 18). B.C. EHS personnel were on scene administering CPR when police arrived. Cpl. Kiener says paramedics determined the pedestrian was deceased.

“We’re trying to do next of kin notification,” Cpl. Kiener told Fraser Valley Today at 3:43 p.m. “Police are still on scene.”

The victim is an adult male, and police are making attempts to do a next of kin notification.

The male is noted as being a pedestrian, Cpl. Kiener said, and not necessarily as a cyclist or e-bike rider just yet.

However, multiple people on social media have said the person was riding a bike at the time of the accident.

In an emailed statement to news media, the Upper Fraser Valley RCMP Detachment wrote the following: “Chilliwack RCMP frontline officers responded to reports that a pedestrian had been struck in the intersection of Vedder Road and Promontory Road. The incident has resulted in the death of an adult male pedestrian.”

Police say the intersection will be locked down a while as personnel from the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service have been dispatched to assist with the investigation into the accident.

“The intersection at Vedder Road and Promontory Road is closed indefinitely as police investigate a serious motor vehicle collision at this location,” Upper Fraser Valley Regional Detachment wrote in an email. “Police are asking pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area and use an alternate route. Please obey traffic control and expect delays as the area is expected to be closed for several hours.”

The driver of the vehicle is cooperating with police. There’s no indication of any kind of hit and run, Cpl. Kiener said.

“We are working to determine the circumstances of this incident, which has tragically claimed a life. The intersection will be closed for quite some time, most likely into the evening hours,” said S/Sgt. Layne Penner with the Chilliwack RCMP. “Please plan an alternate route and avoid the area.”

Anyone who witnessed or has information that may be related and has not yet shared it with police, is asked to contact the Chilliwack RCMP at 604-792-4611.

The incident marks the second fatality involving a pedestrian in 24 hours in Chilliwack. On Monday night, a pedestrian later died after being hit on Boundary Road in rural Chilliwack.
