HARRISON HOT SPRINGS — Harrison Hot Springs Fire Department crews and B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics were dispatched on Family Day to Harrison Hot Springs after multiple people reportedly fell through through the ice at the beachside lagoon.

According to witness Tyler Man of Agassiz, Harrison Fire, Upper Fraser Valley RCMP members and paramedics attended 299 Esplanade Avenue in the lakeside community Monday afternoon after approximately four people fell through the ice.

A helicopter was initially paged and was slated to arrive at 3:35 p.m. Monday afternoon, but wasn’t needed as witnesses described seeing four people wrapped in blankets.

“The helicopter was called off. Patients were in the water for 10 minutes but are stable and just cold, so they will go by ground to hospital,” said Man, who saw the aftermath of the incident unfold. “Everyone walked to the ambulance wrapped in blankets thankfully. They got to a deeper spot in the water and it gave out because it’s not solid anymore.”

The area around the lagoon was apparently packed with visitors and tourists alike on Family Day, Man said.

“It’s super busy out here today,” said Man. “I was shocked. It’s almost like summer out here today with visitors.”

Monday’s incident comes less than two weeks after brothers Case and Erik Timmermans fell through the ice at Grace Lake west of Harrison Lake and tragically died. An 18-year-old male also fell through the ice at Shuswap Lake last week and died.
