Mission hospital temporarily suspends emergency services, cites staffing challenges

Feb 15, 2025 | 2:42 PM

MISSION — Fraser Valley health authorities are now advising Mission and surrounding area residents about a temporary service interruption at Mission Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department.

The interruption is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. tonight (Feb. 15) until Sunday, February 16th at 8:00 a.m. Services will be paused in the evening to ensure that all patients already in urgent care can be seen by a physician before shifts end at 10:00 p.m.

After the 7 p.m. cut-off, emergency-trained nurses will be on-site to re-direct care, transfer patients with urgent needs to a neighbouring hospital, and/or support walk-ins who need basic first aid.

Anyone with a life-threatening emergency, such as chest pain, difficulty breathing or severe bleeding, should call 9-1-1 immediately to be transported to the nearest available and appropriate facility.

This service interruption only affects the Emergency Department. All other services at Mission Memorial Hospital are available. All other Fraser Health emergency rooms are also open with physicians on site.

Those with less urgent health needs are asked to know their non-emergency care options:

  • Call the Fraser Health Crisis Line 24/7 at 1-877-820-7444
  • Call Fraser Health Virtual Care at 1-800-314-0999 to speak with a registered nurse from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. seven days a week.
  • Call 8-1-1 outside those hours to speak with a health service navigator or a registered nurse.

Fraser Health says it is working closely with B.C. Emergency Health Services to ensure high-needs patients are directed to an appropriate hospital emergency service.

In August last year, Mission Memorial had to temporarily suspend emergency services three times due to physician shortages.
