SURREY — Surrey Police Service (SPS) has now released its year-end crime statistics report for 2024.

Overall numbers show a city-wide decrease across property and drug crimes, violent crimes and other Criminal Code offences. Homicides notably decreased by a third between 2023 and 2024– from 12 cases to eight.

Other significant decreases include drug possession (-44%), disturbance (-31%) and identity theft or fraud (-29%).

Not all crimes were made equal, though. Shoplifting and theft over $5000 both went upwards of 20 per cent.

The report also shows that, from October to the end of December, violent crime increased by 3 per cent when compared to the same period in 2023– with sexual offences going from 90 to 122 between both timeframes.

Surrey police took over jurisdiction from the RCMP in November 2024. The Q4 report uses the same format as its predecessor to ensure consistency at the end of the 2024 reporting year.

Future quarterly statistical reports will be updated by the SPS to capture additional metrics of crime and police activity in the city.
