CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack could be eyeing fare hikes soon after a new report received by Council on Tuesday (Feb. 11).

BC Transit has requested a new fare review to align transit prices across the Fraser Valley Regional District. The process would aim to find affordable fares that can maximize revenue while attracting and retaining riders.

Council previously approved some recommended fare changes from the Chilliwack Transportation Advisory Committee back in December 2020, but there were setbacks.

The report stated: “Since that time, the City of Chilliwack, BC Transit, and the province have encountered several challenges, including a multi-year pandemic, a transit strike, and a freeze on fare increases due to the provincial Safe Restart funding agreement, which provided top-up funding to transit systems to account for low ridership during the COVID-19 pandemic.”
