Two Fraser Valley govt. agencies abandon X, formerly known as Twitter

CHILLIWACK — Two government agencies in the Fraser Valley have stopped posting on X, formerly known as Twitter, with one saying the platform no longer aligns with its values.

The District of Hope made a statement Wednesday (Feb. 12) saying it will no longer be active on Twitter. Although the municipality hasn’t posted on X since August 2024, it doesn’t plan to moving forward.

“We remain committed to keeping our community informed and engaged on platforms that better align with our values,” the district said, listing Instagram, Facebook, Threads and Bluesky instead of Twitter.

“For updates, announcements, and all things Hope – be sure to follow!” the district said.

Chilliwack School District no longer posts on X; it has a note in its bio that says, “This account is no longer active.” Its last post was November 6, 2024. Several SD33 trustees have not posted on there in ages, including former board chair Willow Reichelt, while fellow trustee Dr. Carin Bondar hasn’t posted for over two years. Trustee Teri Westerby has no X account, while board chair David Swankey hasn’t posted for over a year. Most of the aforementioned trustees use Facebook regularly to communicate with constituents and parents.

Other area government agencies haven’t followed actions taken by the District of Hope and SD33. The cities of Chilliwack, Abbotsford and Mission all remain a vibrant presence on X, while SD34 (Abbotsford) and SD78 (Fraser-Cascade) use X regularly to reach different audience groups.
