Fraser Valley wildlife centre sees growing need ahead of spring and summer months

ABBOTSFORD — The Elizabeth Wildlife Center Society (EWCS) took flight from one woman’s backyard in 1986. Now, the fully-fledged 1.1-acre property needs a little help with its growing number of rescues.

Despite being located near Abbotsford, the Center accepts calls from across the Fraser Valley and into the Greater Vancouver area.

“We get animals from Agassiz, Rosedale, Kelowna,” said Elizabeth Melnick, founder of the EWCS. “We don’t just do birds either. We get small mammals as well.”

The Center recently requested birdseed donations on social media, owing to the consistent arrival of small birds under its care. Melnick said the non-profit appreciates any help during this time of year, but the real challenge comes in just over a month when more eggs hatch and animals emerge from their burrows.

“Spring and summer is […] wall-to-wall, floor-to-ceiling,” said Melnick. “We can get up to 30 new animals a day in [those seasons].”

More than 1,500 small animals pass through the EWCS each year, roughly half of which are fully rehabilitated and released. The wildlife rehabilitator added that there are more animals in need of rescue now than when she started the Center 39 years ago.

“Every year is more than the year before… [land] development is definitely taking a toll.”

Anyone looking to donate or volunteer can call the Center or visit the EWCS website.
