UPDATE 9:55 A.M. MONDAY: A spokesperson for the Chilliwack RCMP says a man who was apprehended under the Mental Health Act following a police incident Friday night in Chilliwack had outstanding warrants.

According to a statement from Upper Fraser Valley RCMP spokesperson Corporal Teresa Parsons, Chilliwack RCMP members responded to a check well-being for a man living alone Friday night. Police say attempts to speak with the man were unsuccessful. Due to a concern for his safety and that of the public and police officers responding, the Lower Mainland Integrated Emergency Response Team was called out to assist.

Police say neighbours in the area were asked to remain in their homes during the incident. After a short negotiation, the man exited the home and was apprehended under the Mental Health Act. No one was injured in the incident.

The man had outstanding warrants for his arrest at the time and is being held in custody.

Nearby witnesses in Promontory have reported hearing flash bangs during the unfolding incident. More gear has been brought out by police as of 9:14 p.m., and police are reportedly negotiating with an individual named “Graham,” according to Rosamond, who lives about a block from the incident. She said she can hear police loud and clear.

“Police are saying, ‘What are you doing, Graham? We can work this out, come out of your front door,'” Rosamond told Fraser Valley Today at 9:16 p.m.

A formal negotiator has reportedly arrived on scene at 9:35 p.m., Rosamond believes.
