IIO CONCLUDES INVESTIGATION

B.C. police watchdog says no offence committed on fatal 2024 collision in Langley

LANGLEY — The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) has concluded its investigation of a car crash that took the life of one person and injured another.

Early morning on March 18, 2024, a Langley RCMP officer tried to conduct a traffic stop on a black Mazda driving east of 16 Avenue.

The Mazda did not stop and crashed into another vehicle at the intersection of 16 Avenue and 264 Street. The other car’s driver was unharmed, but the Mazda driver and her male passenger were both injured.

The man died in hospital from life-threatening injuries the following evening, on March 19th.

In a news release this morning (Feb. 7), the IIO has concluded that “there are no reasonable grounds to believe the officer may have committed an offence” after the Chief Civilian Director reviewed evidence such as witness statements, medical records and police reports.

The case will not be referred to B.C. Prosecution Service for charges as a result.

The IIO’s public report is not set to be released until police wrap up their own investigation of the collision.
