Update: Abbotsford day care owner, 60, charged with 6 counts of assault; day care identified

UPDATE: There is an Abbotsford day care named Smile ‘N’ Play Daycare whose operator matches the name of the person arrested by the Abbotsford PD.

According to the Smile ‘N Play website, Smile ‘N’ Play Daycare was “born out of a dream ignited by Indu Takhar, a seasoned visionary and mother of 2, who journeyed to Canada with a heart full of passion for nurturing young minds.”

The website says it has three locations in Abbotsford, including 3411 McKinley Drive, 3558 McKinley Drive and 30475 Cardinal Avenue, unit 110. 

Referring to Takhar, the website says, “This compassionate soul, with decades of life experience under her belt, envisioned a place where children could flourish and thrive. Drawing upon her wealth of wisdom and a boundless love for teaching, she created a haven where every child’s potential could blossom. With laughter echoing through the halls and curiosity lighting up their eyes, the children at Smile ‘N’ Play embark on a journey of discovery and wonder each day.”

ABBOTSFORD — Major Crime detectives with the Abbotsford Police Department say a 60-year-old owner-operator of a day care in East Abbotsford has been arrested and charged with six counts of assault.

According to a statement from AbbyPD Constable Jody Thomas, AbbyPD’s Major Crime Unit launched an investigation in October 2024 into reports of children being assaulted by the owner of a day care. The alleged incidents date back to 2022 and involve children ages between 2-6 years old. Police say the Major Crime Unit “diligently” followed evidence it received and advanced the investigation.

On Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2025, Major Crime Unit detectives arrested 60-year-old Indu Takhar, who has been charged with six counts of assault and subsequently released from custody under several court-ordered conditions that consist of not having any contact with any person under 16 years of age and not going to any day care centre.
