GRACE LAKE — The Upper Fraser Valley RCMP Detachment has confirmed that two men who went ice fishing sometime on Tuesday are dead after falling through ice at Grace Lake, located northwest of Harrison Hot Springs.

According to a statement from police, Agassiz RCMP were notified Tuesday night, Feb. 4 at 11:16 p.m. that two men who had gone fishing at Grace Lake during the day had not returned home. Police say a family member visited the location where the men were believed to be and witnessed a large hole in the ice along with fishing gear, prompting them to believe the men had fallen through the ice.

Agassiz RCMP along with Kent-Harrison Search and Rescue (SAR), Mission SAR, and Chilliwack SAR were dispatched to the scene where two bodies were located below the surface of the ice. The RCMP Underwater Recovery Team (URT) was called out to execute the challenging recovery operation.

Police say the URT is a unique roster of expert divers who train in specialized police diving techniques, including ice diving. Their skills along with the support of SAR were instrumental in safely recovering the two bodies and ensuring there were no additional casualties.

Police say Agassiz RCMP are working closely with B.C. Coroners Service; however, criminality is not believed to be a factor in these deaths.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased during this difficult time,” said Agassiz RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Chad Raymond. “This tragedy serves as a stark reminder that ice conditions are constantly changing and even if you’ve tested the thickness, the weather and water conditions can make it unsafe.
