FRASER VALLEY — The wintery conditions might be ideal for skiing, but they’re not ideal for driving into Vancouver on Highway 1.

For the second day in a row, BC Highway Patrol is urging motorists to delay unnecessary travel plans as multiple collisions in both directions on Highway 1 near the Port Mann Bridge are causing extreme traffic delays.

As a result, BC Highway Patrol spokesperson Corporal Michael McLaughlin is asking commuters to reconsider driving until the roads are clear.

“If you’re a confident driver who is prepared for the snow, you need to slow down more than usual,” said Cpl. McLaughlin. “If you’re not a confident driver, or your car isn’t winter ready, stay off the roads entirely. This isn’t your day.”

BC Highway Patrol says it will be working with the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to get Highway 1 cleared and safe for travel as quickly as possible.

In the meantime, BCHP suggests motorists do the following:

  • Consider whether you absolutely have to drive;
  • Ensure your vehicle has good snow tires and is completely free from snow on all windows, the roof, the hood and the trunk;
  • Leave extra time for travel and be more patient than usual;
  • If you’re a confident driver, slow down.

BC Highway Patrol also encourages motorists to plan ahead and consult DriveBC’s website and their local radio and TV stations to keep up with local conditions.
