CHILLIWACK — The first snowy blast of winter in the Fraser Valley has led to school closures in Abbotsford and Mission Monday morning (Feb. 3), while Chilliwack schools are open today.

The City of Mission said public works crews worked overnight to focus on top-priority roads and will continue until those routes are clear before proceeding onto second and third priority routes.

“We are working 24/7 to help ensure the safety of our roads during this weather event,” the city said. “The snow alert continues into this morning. Please avoid the roads if you can to give our crews the space they need to get the job done.”

Closures in Mission include Mission schools, Mission Leisure Centre, City Hall, Welton Common and fire hall administration.

Abbotsford School District has closed all schools while University of the Fraser of the Valley has shuttered its entire network of campuses in Abbotsford, Mission, Chilliwack and Hope due to what it calls hazardous road conditions. Langley and Maple Ridge public schools are similarly closed.

The City of Abbotsford has cancelled curbside garbage and recycling collection scheduled for Monday as well.

Chilliwack School District spokesperson Amy Dhanjal says all schools and busses are running today. Highroad Academy, an independent school in Chilliwack, remains open today. John Calvin Christian School in Yarrow is closed due to poor weather conditions. St. Mary’s School in Chilliwack is open.

As of 7:20 a.m. Monday morning, the wind chill in Chilliwack is about -14. Environment Canada forecasts northeasterly winds will range from 30 km/h gusting up to 50 km/h. Chilliwack will only reach a high of 0 today.
