
IIO called to investigate fatal Friday shooting in Surrey
SURREY — The Independent Investigations Office of British Columbia (IIO) is investigating a Friday (Jan. 31) night shooting involving Surrey police, that left one person dead.
An IIO news release says officers from the Surrey Police Service were called to execute an arrest warrant at a residence in the 13900 block of 100 Avenue of Surrey shortly after 9 p.m. When police located the subject of the warrant, it was determined the individual was armed with a weapon.
An interaction ensued, during which officers discharged their weapons, including a firearm. The suspect suffered a life-threatening injury. Medical treatment was provided but the suspect later died at the scene.
The IIO was notified and launched an investigation to determine the details of the encounter and assess whether police actions were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate.
