Illegal encampment crops up in Chilliwack River Valley after deactivated dirt road gets unlawfully refilled

CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack cleanup volunteer Ross Aikenhead says it’s discouraging to see an illegal encampment crop up on what was supposed to be a permanently deactivated dirt road just off Chilliwack Lake Road.

Aikenhead, who has been regularly petitioned regional and provincial authorities to take action against about the negative environmental impacts associated with backcountry camps, says a problematic encampment has been located near Borden Creek, a few kilometers past Thurston Meadows.

Back in January 2024, a provincial contractor cleaned up a homeless camp across from Thurston Meadows and deactivated the dirt road so that RVs, trailers and trucks could not access it. One of the occupants of this camp, Aikenhead believes, was responsible for the mess there and has been allegedly linked to wire theft in the Chilliwack River Valley. It’s also alleged the main person at that camp was responsible for starting two large RVs on fire, during a province-wide fire ban, so as to salvage the metal.

Fast forward to January 2025, where this individual has set up a new camp.

“The area she’s in is a problem area, and the side road was deactivated after two RVs, a car and a lot of garbage was removed,” said Aikenhead, who meticulously tracks the location and details of virtually every encampment east of the Vedder Bridge in Chilliwack. “She has [since] filled in the trenches to get in there and set up another illegal encampment. I’m sure it’ll become a big problem again.”

The road was deactivated by Recreation Sites and Trails B.C. and it needs authorization to be reactivated, Aikenhead pointed out.

Illegal backcountry camps are an ongoing problem for which there are few solutions. Aikenhead says he phoned the provincial Report All Poachers and Polluters hotline (1-877-952-RAPP) for years and got nowhere. The endless calls never led to any action.

More recently, Aikenhead emailed two provincial managers, Brian Bubela and Mike Peters, about the scourge of illegal encampments but never heard back from them.

At last count, Aikenhead estimates there are well over 15 encampments in the Chilliwack River Valley.
