CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack Assistant Fire Chief Krista Minar has confirmed that one person has died after a fire happened on the third floor of an apartment building on Victoria Avenue Thursday morning (Jan. 23).

According to a statement from Assistant Fire Chief Minar, Chilliwack firefighters were paged just after 9 a.m. for the report of smoke coming from the top floor of a unit of an apartment building in the 45800 block of Victoria Avenue. When firefighters arrived, fire alarms were sounding but no visible smoke was identified from the exterior of the building. When firefighters investigated, fire crews confirmed an active fire within a unit, resulting in additional resources to support the incident.

Minar says firefighters from Halls 1, 2, 4, and 6 were dispatched to the scene. Crews worked to quickly establish a water supply and conducted an aggressive fire attack, thereby containing the fire to a single affected unit.

“Thanks to their efforts, other units in the building sustained minimal damage, allowing residents to return to their homes. BC Emergency Health Services (BCAS) and the RCMP were also on scene to provide support,” Minar said.

Sadly, fire crews discovered a deceased individual at the scene.

“The Chilliwack Fire Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of the individual,” Minar said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the RCMP, with support from the Chilliwack Fire Department. No injuries to firefighters were reported.

“We extend our gratitude to the building’s residents for evacuating promptly when alarms sounded and for creating the necessary space for firefighters to safely and effectively respond to the incident,” Minar said.
