With tounge in cheek, Mission Mounties deal with unusual rescue call
MISSION — A call about a large, live iguana sunbathing near the shoulder of Lougheed Highway on January 11 had Mission RCMP officers gearing up for an unusual showdown.
The report, which came in early that morning, described a 4-foot-long lizard lounging near Shook Street. While some might dismiss such a claim as a tall tale, seasoned Mounties know the job can take them into some pretty wild situations.
With Hatzic Lake nearby, the idea of a rogue iguana venturing into the wetlands wasn’t entirely far-fetched. However, iguana wrangling isn’t part of standard police training. An RCMP news release said officers were armed with a dog-catching pole, a large crate, and more courage than they had planned for that day, as they headed to the scene.
As they approached the creature it became clear the iguana was anatomically… off. Upon closer inspection, the mighty reptile turned out to be a highly realistic stuffed toy.
