UFV launches new reconciliation program on Chilliwack campus
CHILLIWACK — The University of the Fraser Valley (UFV) is providing locals with a chance to take a significant step toward fostering reconciliation with the launch of its Tier 1 Xwelítem Siyáya: Allyship and Reconciliation Building program. Registration for the program, offered at UFV’s Chilliwack campus, is now open.
Developed by UFV’s Peace and Reconciliation Centre (PARC) in partnership with UFV Continuing Education and key Stó:lō organizations, including the Stó:lō Nation, Tribal Council, Research and Resource Management Centre, and Grand Chief’s Council, the program offers participants an opportunity for a unique journey into allyship and reconciliation.
The curriculum combines monthly presentations, workshops, and hands-on land-based learning to explore critical topics such as Lands and Resources, Settler Colonialism, Governance, Assimilation and Residential Schools, and Culture and Spirituality. Organizers say the program is designed to equip participants with the empathy, knowledge, and skills to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities in the Fraser Valley and beyond.
The program begins on January 30, 2025, with sessions held on the second Thursday of each month, supplemented by Saturday workshops. UFV says the program is structured to accommodate working professionals, students, and community members.
