Luckakuck Way project work pushing forward

CHILLIWACK — The City of Chilliwack says safety and traffic improvements are underway along Luckakuck Way with work expected to be complete this spring. The project was spawned out of safety concerns for the stretch of Luckakuck Way from Vedder Road to the Southern Railway bridge.

According to city officials, members of the public and ICBC expressed concerns about the road design, specifically driveway access to Luckakuck Way, saying it leads to poor driving behaviours. The improvements are intended to enhance safety for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

Much of the project has been completed. Workers have paved a multi-use pathway to the Valley Rail Trail while 80 per cent of driveway access concrete work is done. Traffic signal bases, poles, and path lighting infrastructure are also in place.

Future tasks which are contingent on weather, include the installation of path lighting poles, traffic signals, construction of centre lane concrete medians, and final paving including road markings. The City says the work should be completed this spring.

When the work is done, residents will benefit from the new traffic control signal and pedestrian crosswalks at the north access to the Superstore property. A multi-use pathway with lighting will connect the traffic signal to the Valley Rail Trail. Two-way left-turn lanes will be replaced with designated left-turn lanes and concrete medians, preventing dangerous turns across traffic.

Breakwater Contracting is leading the work after winning the $1.3 million contract last June.
