CHILLIWACK — Chilliwack school board candidate Katie Bartel is appealing for smaller donations from prospective donors ahead of the upcoming by-election in March.

In a spirited message posted online, Bartel says she’s feeling energized after the holidays with roughly two months before the by-election on Saturday, March 1.

“The holidays are behind us, and I’m ready to dive headfirst into the next steps of becoming your Chilliwack School Trustee!” Bartel wrote. “I’m excited. I’m energized. I’m motivated!”

Bartel says she’s got a lot of work ahead of her over the next eight weeks and needs supporters to help make it happen. Part of her appeal stems from the unfortunate reality that campaigns cost money. Candidates are only permitted to contribute a defined amount by Elections B.C. regulations, leaving political candidates to inevitably seek financial support.

“Here’s the deal: Municipal election campaigns are expensive, and by law, candidates can only personally fund a limited amount,” Bartel said. “Advertising, events, and outreach all add up quickly! So I’m asking: If you’re a BC resident and it’s not too much of a stretch, could you donate just $25?”

Bartel suggests that if every follower of her page contributed, she would meet her goal of funding her campaign. With roughly 207 followers as of Tuesday morning, she would generate approximately $5,200 if that scenario occurred.

“If every follower of this page chipped in, we’d hit our goal in no time! Every dollar goes directly toward building a stronger, more inclusive future for our students—one where every voice matters and every student belongs,” Bartel said. “I’m so grateful for your support—whether it’s through donations, volunteering, sharing my social media posts, or simply cheering me on. Together, we can make a real difference for our schools and community. Thank you for being part of this journey with me.”

Bartel has served as the elected chair of the Chilliwack District Parent Advisory Council for the past three years. As a parent of three children with diverse and complex support needs, she says her roles as a community support worker, education assistant, executive director of Chilliwack Pride and classroom facilitator with Chilliwack Restorative Justice have uniquely positioned her for the Chilliwack Board of Education.

Laurie Throness is the only other candidate in Chilliwack that has expressed an interest in running for the school board by-election.
