SPCA reports discovery of cats in abandoned vehicles in Vancouver and Abbotsford

VANCOUVER — The BC SPCA is caring for an elderly black cat after it and another cat were found inside an abandoned vehicle that had been towed.

“The towing company reached out to the BC SPCA’s animal helpline when the cats were discovered in the vehicle,” said Eileen Drever, the BC SPCA’s senior officer for protection and stakeholder relations.

The abandoned vehicle was filled with hazardous items, rotting food, and garbage. The towing company provided the cats with food and water, and were particularly concerned about the elderly cat, who appeared injured and immobile but ate when fed.

A BC SPCA protection officer attended the scene, reporting the rescue took time as the nervous cats retreated among the haphazardly stacked items. Both cats were safely removed and taken to the BC SPCA’s Vancouver centre.

The grey cat has already been adopted, but the elderly black cat is still waiting for a home.

This is the second incident in a month of cats found in towed vehicles. “The other took place in Abbotsford, where an abandoned vehicle with flat tires was towed to a tire shop where staff found a cat and two kittens inside,” said Drever. The cats were brought to an animal hospital who reached out to the BC SPCA asking if we could take them into care.

The cat and kittens are in foster and will be available for adoption in approximately three to four weeks.
