RCMP warn public about door-to-door heat pump scam in the Fraser Valley
MISSION — Mounties in Mission are urging residents to be vigilant after fraudulent sales reps convinced two homeowners they would qualify for substantial rebates for a new heat pump, only to pull a bait-and-switch after the fact.
According to information provided by the Mission RCMP Detachment, police became aware of two recent incidents where a door-to-door salesman identified himself as being a representative of a home services company. Police say the salesman told the homeowners that they were eligible for government rebates that would cost some or all of the cost to purchase the heat pump and have it installed. After residents agreed, the unidentified company then removed their existing furnace and installed a heat pump.
Shortly thereafter, the residents received an invoice from a financing company for over $20,000 and were told they did not qualify for the rebates.
Mission RCMP says residents who get approached by sales representatives offering this type of service are encouraged to confirm in advance whether they will qualify for any rebates, as some rebates are limited to specific products and specific installation companies.
