Abbotsford completes new transit exchange to enhance rider experience
ABBOTSFORD — The City of Abbotsford and BC Transit, in collaboration with the provincial government, have completed the Montrose Avenue Transit Exchange. It’s considered a key infrastructure project aimed at improving public transit access and rider amenities. The new exchange, located in Historic Downtown Abbotsford between McDougall Avenue and South Fraser Way, opened for service in November.
The exchange features 10 bus bays, new shelters with bench seating, accessible sidewalks, bike lockers, and racks. Upgrades include garbage bins, improved street lighting, and new crosswalks to enhance safety and navigation. The improvements are designed to better accommodate riders and increase service capacity, creating stronger transit connections between key areas, including Highstreet Shopping Centre and the University of the Fraser Valley.
The project was identified in the City’s 2018 Transportation and Transit Master Plan as a priority to enhance connectivity and support the growing demand for transit services. Construction began in January 2024, following the project’s announcement in August 2023. The Province of BC contributed nearly $3.9 million toward the project, which is expected to play a critical role in Abbotsford’s future transit network.
“The new Montrose Avenue Transit Exchange will certainly help connect residents and visitors with key destinations throughout Abbotsford, while supporting our city’s growth and commitment to sustainable and accessible transportation,” said Abbotsford Mayor Henry Braun.
