Chilliwack firefighters extinguish fire at makeshift cabin off Chilliwack Lake Road

CHILLIWACK — Three Chilliwack Fire Department engines were dispatched Monday afternoon after a makeshift homeless camp containing a log home-style cabin went up in flames off Chilliwack Lake Road, roughly one kilometer from the Vedder Bridge.

According to scanner dispatch, firefighters were paged at about 2:18 p.m. Monday (Dec. 16) for the report of multiple tents on fire. Firefighters were advised that propane had been used at the encampment.

Firefighters arrived to find a cabin engulfed in flames. The fire was estimated at 20 feet by 20 feet. The fire was contained.

The blaze was located about a minute’s walk off Chilliwack Lake Road.

Engine 4 (South Sumas fire hall) was the first to arrive on scene, followed by Tender 4 and Air Support 4.

Fraser Valley Today has obtained a picture of the homeless camp showing a torched wood burn.

RCMP members were dispatched for traffic control purposes.

There were no reported injuries, nor were there any occupants of the camp around when firefighters arrived.

A naloxone kit had been nailed to one of the trees at the encampment for easy access in case of an overdose.
