One arrested after assault prompts safety measures in Agassiz

CHILLIWACK — A male suspect was arrested Thursday (Dec. 12) afternoon after an assault in Agassiz led to heightened safety measures, including a hold-and-secure at a local elementary secondary school.

Agassiz RCMP received a report of the assault at 2:32 p.m. Police identified the suspect, who fled the scene on foot. Authorities said the man was armed and had made threats toward police.

In the interest of public safety, a notice was issued, and the nearby elementary school was placed on hold-and-secure as a precaution.

The suspect was apprehended without incident a short time later and remains in police custody. Officials have not disclosed details about the charges.

“We want to recognize the quick actions of the Agassiz RCMP frontline officers, as well as the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Section and RCMP officers from nearby jurisdictions, who were able to resolve this incident quickly and safely.” said RCMP Cpl. Carmen Kiener.

The safety measures were lifted following the arrest. No injuries were reported in connection with the incident.
