AGASSIZ — A police incident in downtown Agassiz required a nearby school to be placed on a brief hold and secure Thursday afternoon (Dec. 12).

According to information distributed by Agassiz Elementary Secondary School principal Greg Lawley, Mounties notified the school at approximately 3 p.m. about a police incident in downtown Agassiz. The incident led to a “hold and secure” at AESS and meant students who were outside on school grounds were ushered inside the school while staff locked the doors. School busses had already left the school grounds. Students and staff were asked to remain inside the school until the incident was cleared by the RCMP.

“Our staff did an excellent job of making sure students were safe,” Lawley said.

At 3:25 p.m., RCMP contacted AESS staff and advised them the incident had been resolved and the hold and secure could be lifted.

“We will be reviewing our Hold & Secure/Lockdown procedures with our students tomorrow morning first block,” Lawley said.

The Upper Fraser Valley RCMP posted online at 3:19 p.m. that officers were attending an ongoing incident in downtown Agassiz. Residents, parents and motorists were advised to stay away from police activity and to not share incident details/locations on social media.

At 3:22 p.m., UFVRD said the situation in Agassiz ended peacefully.
