Abbotsford PD warns public about fake taxi scam
ABBOTSFORD — Police in Abbotsford are warning the public about a black Hyundai Elantra with a taxi sign on its roof that appears to be complicit in a scam circulating within the community.
According to a statement from the Abbotsford Police Department, authorities say the fake Elantra taxi was seen last week in Abbotsford. Two males are associated with the taxi scheme in which one male pretends to be a customer struggling to cover his taxi fare. The male approaches several people within larger parking lots claiming to need help to pay the outstanding amount. Once individuals agree to assist and hand over their debit or credit cards, the vehicle’s occupants covertly swap out their cards.
Police say both suspects are men in their early twenties. Similar incidents are reportedly occurring throughout the Lower Mainland.
AbbyPD says it is warning the public to be cognizant of the ongoing scam and report any suspicious activity to 604-859-5225. Police investigators suspect this taxi is fraudulent and not associated with any reputable company.
