Curbside glass collection coming to Abbotsford in mid-2025: city

ABBOTSFORD – Households in Abbotsford already receiving waste collection services will have glass containers added to their recycling pick up starting next year.

The city has announced plans to include glass in its regular recycling program by spring, allowing residents to leave bottles and jars for curbside pick up.

“The new initiative will make it easier for households to recycle glass by providing a separate bin for empty jars and bottles, placed alongside other recyclables,” said City of Abbotsford spokesperson Aletta Vanderheyden in a statement.

“Introducing glass recycling as a separate stream will reduce contamination in blue carts and make the process safer for workers handling the materials.”

Many municipalities across Canada do not offer curbside glass recycling due to challenges tied to contamination and processing difficulties.

Broken glass can stick to other recyclables like paper and cardboard, reducing their recyclability. Additionally, shards of glass pose safety risks to recycling workers.

Glass recycling is also typically expensive, making it a less affordable option for many communities.

When Abbotsford’s program launches in mid-2025, glass will be collected every two weeks on the same schedule as regular recycling pick ups.

Glass bottles and jars will also continue to be accepted at the city recycling depot.
