HOPE – BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure estimates that closing and repairing Highway 7 west of Hope after a mid-November rockslide has cost approximately $1 million.

A spokesperson for the province said that “specialized rock scaling and blasting” to stabilize the bluff beside the highway accounted for much of the expense.

“Additionally, Highway 7 was damaged by falling rock, and extensive repairs were required,” ministry public affairs officer Murray Sinclair explained in an email.

The roadway was closed for roughly 12 days after large rocks fell onto the road between Haig Scale and Seventh-day Adventist Youth Camp Road on Nov. 15.
