FRASER VALLEY — Despite the declining value of the Canadian dollar, more than 100 thousand Canadians including thousands from the Fraser Valley, are expected to cross the border this weekend to enjoy Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States and take advantage of Black Friday shopping specials.

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) is reminding travelers to prepare for busy border crossings during the peak travel period. The agency, which processed over 86 million travelers in 2023 and intercepted more than 72,200 kilograms of prohibited substances, a 30% increase from 2022, says it remains committed to balancing efficiency with security during high-traffic times.

To ensure a smooth journey, it has issued several travel tips:

Plan Ahead: Check border wait times and aim to cross early in the morning to avoid delays.

Choose Alternate Routes: Opt for less crowded ports of entry and confirm operating hours using the CBSA Directory of Offices and Services.

Be Prepared to Declare: Declare all goods, including items in your vehicle. Have receipts and a clear estimate of their value ready to determine duty exemptions.

Review Restrictions: Poultry products, including turkey, are restricted. Homemade foods containing poultry are not allowed.

Travel Documents: Ensure all travel documents are ready to expedite processing.

Travelers should also consider specific regulations for children, pets, food, and medications. The CBSA encourages preparation to minimize delays and ensure a safe, enjoyable holiday weekend.
