HOPE — BC’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure says Highway 7 west of Hope will remain closed for at least another week after a substantial rockslide closed all lanes late Thursday night, Nov. 14.

According to a statement on DriveBC, the provincial agency now expects Highway 7 connecting Agassiz with Hope could reopen Wednesday evening, November 27 at 6 p.m.

Fraser Valley Today reporter Don Mitchell reported over the weekend that the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure had no estimated reopening time for Highway 7 near Hope, a day after a rockslide closed all lanes on Friday.

A spokesperson for the province on Saturday afternoon said crews were still on-site dealing with loose rock on the mountainside following a geotechnical assessment.

“Rock scaling is underway at the site of this week’s rockslide,” Ministry spokesperson Craig Chambers said.

“Once the remaining loose rock has been brought down, clean-up and repairs will begin.”

Chambers said there is no estimated date or time for a reopening and that the ministry is being updated regularly as work progresses.

The next update from crews on site is expected early Saturday evening.

Both lanes of Highway 7 between Haig Scale and Seventh-day Adventist Youth Camp Road were closed overnight Friday after “large rocks” tumbled onto the road.

The province said downed hydro lines and “significant pavement damage” have hampered efforts to reopen the road.

Highway 1 through Hope is the recommended alternative for drivers, according to the province.
