CHILLIWACK – The City of Chilliwack is alerting drivers and residents that one kilometer of Tyson Road will be closed to traffic for 12 hours on Monday night.

The city’s engineering department says the closure between Watson and South Sumas Roads is to relocate BC Hydro utility poles.

Residents who live along the stretch will be the exception to the closure rules.

“These relocations are being undertaken over the course of one evening to advance the work schedule and minimize traffic delays and public inconvenience,” the city said in a statement.

The project is part of two separate urbanization projects aimed at enhancing safety by making the area more efficient for vehicular traffic and safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

A combined $1 million in grants from the province will fund the work, which is part of Chilliwack’s Active Transportation Plan, seeking to improve stormwater management, create multi-use pathways, widen roads, and upgrade electrical systems.

Officials are targeting late March for the completion of all work tied to the project.
