Survey essential to expansion of Abbotsford’s sports fields and courts amid inevitable community growth: city

ABBOTSFORD – Residents have just over three weeks to share their perspectives on the state of Abbotsford’s outdoor sports facilities and where they envision them over the next 15 years.

Stage one of the city’s Sports Field and Sports Court Strategy began this past week with a community consultation, one of four main components that will lead to preliminary recommendations from city staff in the new year.

The question is whether the city’s 53 sports courts and 59 outdoor fields will be sufficient for a population increase of 50,000 over the next 15 years.

“The strategy will cover a wide variety of facilities, including fields and courts for a variety of outdoor sports, as well as bike and skate parks, disc golf courses, and other outdoor sports infrastructure like lawn bowling and horseshoe pitches,” the city explained in a statement on Nov. 7.

Input is being collected through a survey, in-person pop-up events, and sessions and questionnaires for user groups and community organizations.

The study closes on Dec. 2 and aims to identify where to invest, how to improve management, and what city resources will be allocated to new development and restoration.

Residents and stakeholders can access the online survey at: https://letstalkabbotsford.ca/sport-field-court-strategy.

Paper copies of the survey are also available at:

Matsqui Recreation Centre (3106 Clearbrook Rd)

Abbotsford Recreation Centre (2499 McMillan Rd)

Abbotsford City Hall (32315 South Fraser Way)

Staff say the survey will take about 15 to 20 minutes to complete.

Stage two of the project is expected to begin in early 2025, with a finalized strategy anticipated in late 2025.
