OTTAWA – A by-election has been called to fill the vacant Cloverdale–Langley City seat in the House of Commons.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s office made it official on Sunday amid a Liberal nomination meeting in Surrey to determine which of the two candidates, Madison Fleischer or Shaukat Khan, would represent the party.

By-election day will be Monday, December 16, with advance polling days from Dec. 6 to Dec. 9.

Early voting can be completed at the Elections Canada office in Cloverdale–Langley City anytime between now and Dec. 10.

Those choosing to use the vote-by-mail option must apply by Dec. 10 and return their special ballot by mail or in person at the local Elections Canada office before polls close on election day.

The riding has been without an MP since John Aldag resigned on May 27 to run for a seat in the 2024 provincial election as a B.C. NDP candidate.

Aldag was unsuccessful in his bid to be the MLA for Langley-Abbotsford, losing to BC Conservative Harman Bhangu by more than 5,600 votes.

He became the MP for Cloverdale–Langley City after winning against three others in 2021, including Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) candidate Tamara Jansen.

Jansen secured the CPC nomination in October and will run once again in the electoral district.
