VANCOUVER – Environment Canada has issued an advisory for residents in and around the Fraser Valley West amid a system set to bring heavy rain and strong winds Sunday afternoon.

The agency says the South Coast will be the centre of the rough weather which is expected to bring reduced visibilities on roadways and potentially washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.

“Rain will begin Sunday afternoon and will intensify Sunday evening before easing on Monday afternoon,” Environment Canada said in its statement.

“Rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 mm are expected by Monday morning with locally higher amounts possible.”

This storm is also expected to bring strong southeasterly winds on Sunday night.

The BC River Forecast Centre issued its own “High Streamflow Advisory” due to the heavy rain predicted for next week.

The City of Abbotsford alerted its residents via social media Friday night advising nearby storm drains be cleared of leaves and debris in advance.

They also warned that the possibility of high winds could cause tree branches to break and lead to power outages.
