BURNABY — A 35-year-old man found guilty in a 2019 hit-and-run that injured two police officers, including an Abbotsford PD (APD) constable, has been sentenced to five years in prison.

The RCMP confirmed the sentence in a release on Thursday night, which highlighted a timeline of events starting with a March 4, 2019, post revealing a probe into the collision near the 5000 block of North Fraser Way and North Fraser Crescent in south Burnaby.

The incident, which occurred just before noon, involved an APD officer on duty with the Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service and an RCMP officer, the latter of whom sustained life-altering injuries.

Jason Kirupakaran, 35, was sentenced to four years in a B.C. court on Nov. 7 for criminal negligence charges and received an additional year for failing to remain at the scene of an accident.

“Our thoughts remain with the two injured officers and their loved ones as their lives have been forever changed,” Chief Superintendent Graham de la Gorgendiere from the Burnaby detachment said in a statement.

“This was an extremely difficult and complex investigation, with many teams and police officers methodically working toward this result.”

The court also imposed a seven-year driving prohibition on Kirupakaran and issued a DNA order.
