UPDATE: Environment Canada alert warns drivers on mountain passes in southern B.C. of potentially ‘treacherous driving conditions’

VANCOUVER – Canada’s weather agency has issued a road alert for B.C.’s mountain passes, including the Coquihalla between Hope and Merritt, due to high winds and snow expected by Monday.

Environment Canada says a “strong Pacific frontal system” will pass through central B.C. and eventually move down to southern B.C., bringing strong winds and snow.

“Heavy snow is expected to begin on these mountain passes Monday morning and will taper off after midnight, early Tuesday morning,” the agency said in its statement Sunday afternoon.

“Lower elevations will likely see a change to rain by Monday afternoon, but snowfall accumulations are expected to range from near 20 centimetres at the Coquihalla summit to near 35 centimetres at Kootenay Pass by Tuesday morning.”

The advisory also includes the Connector (Highway 97C) and Allison Pass on Highway 3 between Hope and Princeton.

“Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots may become difficult to navigate due to accumulating snow,” Environment Canada added.

“Weather in the mountains can change suddenly, resulting in hazardous driving conditions.”
